Wheelchair Accessible Stores!

Every so often someone (ok, usually me) will ask if a business or location is handicapped accessible, and [info]boston  is generally helpful, so I'm giving back to the comm with this link...

Traveling Wheelchair! This local guy in a wheelchair (and his friends) review and rank the accessibility of Greater Boston businesses, according to meeting ADA requirements. It's not systematic, basically wherever he ends up (theater houses along with bowling alleys) - but I find that especially helpful, since it's a cross-section of businesses and Panera ain't gonna mention their accessibility online.

(BTW, Hollister at Patriot Place gets 3 stars, with no stairs guarding that stupid fake tiki hut entrance. So now everyone can get madras boardies for their bro, yo!)

Cultural Cafe dinner - next stop, Estragon Tapas!

Discover the diverse cultures and cuisines Boston-area restaurants have to offer at Cultural Café, hosted by Hostelling International USA. On the first Tuesday of every month, enjoy a meal with members of the community, learn about a new culture, and help support Cultural Kitchen, HI-USA’s premiere educational program for inner-city youth.

Estragon Tapas Bar in the South End is the first stop for 2010, on February 2nd. The meal at Estragon will recreate a slice of sunny Madrid - perfect to warm up a cold Boston evening. The staff will also demonstrate a piece of Spanish culture as part of the fun.

We now have a meetup group. To join, go to www.meetup.com/culturalcafe

Where is the Metro?

They've stopped replenishing the (usually burgeoning) supply of Metros at my T stop and I can't find discarded ones to pilfer from the floor or the seats in the trains either.  Is it gone forever (Nooooooooooooooooo!) or is it just on hiatus? Does anyone know? I've googled, but I haven't found any information.

Edit: Its back! Thank God. My commute is saved.

yoga rec

Hi all,

I'm looking for a yoga studio that caters more to people who are looking for a really good stretching and strengthening program than to those who are interested in meditation and spirituality. I've googled and yelped, but can't locate what I'm looking for: somewhere like this, but in the Boston area. Anyone know of such a place? Thanks.

Needed: ride from NYC to Chestnut Hill, morning of Sunday Jan. 10, for two people and lots of stuff

My partner and I are going to Cambridge for Arisia (a science fiction convention) and could really use a ride up, since we'll be doing a lot of cooking at a friend's place in Chestnut Hill first and need to bring a bunch of equipment with us. If you happen to be going that way on Sunday the 10th and have room in your car for two people and lots of stuff, please let me know!

(Yes, I know all the dangers of ridesharing; there will be lots and lots of background-checking and talking beforehand and friends with our phone numbers and routes etc.)

EDIT: It's been suggested that I make it explicit that we're happy to cover gas and tolls and provide travel snacks.

Waxing

In trying a find a waxer, I checked the memories and came across Priscilla at Skin & Body Works in Davis Sq. Are they still open? I've been trying to call them all day, and all I get is a "full mailbox" notice.

Alternatively, any other recommendations for a good & preferrably cheap bikini/Brazilian waxer?

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) - Opening this Friday!

"Romeo, Romeo... Who needs a Romeo?" Flat Earth Theatre ponders this and other deep subjects in their upcoming production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield presented January 8th through the 16th.

Come marvel as three thespians condense the entirety of The Bard's works into a single evening. Cheer as the Tudor monarchs play football for the crown, salivate while Titus Andronicus hosts a cooking show, and sob as you finally discover why Hamlet is so emo. Originally produced in 1987, The Complete Works was among the first plays to attempt this momentous feat. This January, Flat Earth will bring this hilarious romp to the Factory Theatre in Boston's Historic South End.

Performances are to be held January 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, and 16th at 8 PM with a matinee presented Sunday, January 10th at 2 PM. Additionally, there will be a "Pay-What-You-Can" preview held Thursday, January 7th at 8 PM. All shows will be performed at the The Factory Theatre located at 791 Tremont Street, Boston, MA. Tickets are priced at $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or online here.

Boston Free Films: Jan. 3rd - 10th

This week is historically a pretty bad week for films because most of the schools aren't back in session, but, thanks to MIT's IAP and the Museum of Science's Free Film Fridays, there is enough action to keep you happy. Because there can always be some last minute additions/changes, check the Twitter feed for updates.

* BPL Copley begins its yearlong Made in Massachusetts film series with a screening of "Little Women" tonight.
* MIT has a "Life & Death of Terry Gilliam" series (don't worry, he's not dead yet) with "The Meaning of Life" tonight and "Time Bandits" on Wednesday.
* MIT will also screen a series of films on the mind, starting Tuesday with "Memento".
* For you physics lecture fans, MIT will show lectures from Richard Feynman midday on Wednesday and Thursday.
* MIT's Rotch Library will screen "Brooklyn Matters" and "Crips & Bloods" at midday on Thursday and Friday.
* The Museum of Science will show 4-5 different 40-50 minute films on Fridays in January. Starts at 11 am with last screening at 9 pm.
* Real Colegio Complutense resumes their Friday night screenings with "Tacones lejanos".
* Brattle Theater's Elements of Cinema screening is Saturday at 11 am. Film still to be announced.
* There will be a screening of "Beneath Everest: Nepal Reborn" on Saturday at Tufts.
* MIT Anime Club will have Saturday screenings of complete series starting with "Chäos;HEAd".
* There are a few other films at libraries and nonprofits around the area.

Mental illness graphic novel in Boston (and area) bookstores

Hi all,

I've recently published a graphic novel dealing with a teenage girl's struggle to cope with her mom's schizophrenia. Titled the road to god knows..., it's very much a slice of life story and is probably closest in theme to Bryan Talbot's The Tale of One Bad Rat and Nate Powell's Swallow Me Whole. There's a dedicated website for the book at http://trtgk.vonallan.com/ if you'd like to learn a little more. Comicopia in Boston, The Outer Limits in Waltham, and Larry's Comics in Lowell are all carrying my book.

Cover, trailer and whatnot under the cut! )

super8 camera/film equipment

Just wondering if anyone has any super8 film gear they want to sell or get rid of. Even if it's busted, I'd be happy to take a look at it and see if it's fixable. I've been keeping an eye on CL, too. But I figured I'd try here, too.

BostonBusMap

I wrote an app recently that uses the real-time bus GPS information provided by the MBTA to plot buses on a map of an android phone. You can see it here: http://terribleinformation.org/george/bostonbusmap. It's free! but only for android phones.

Hi everyone...checked the rules and hope this is allowed!

I have 4 tickets for sale for the Boston College versus Boston University hockey game (also Northeastern versus New Hampshire women's game) at Fenway on January 8.

The tickets are in the Right Field Grandstand, and as of a couple hours ago, going for $100+ on Stub Hub. The game is sold out (as you can see here: http://www.tickets.com/fenwayhockey/).

I'm looking to sell them for face value ($57.25 each) + shipping.

Anyone interested? Please let a message here or drop me an email at ma2760 at gmail dot com.

Thanks :) And go Bruins! What a win today.
